A study published in Diabetes care reported that cancer patients are at a greater risk of developing diabetes. In the Denmark-based study, more than 45,000 cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2019 alone. Meanwhile, the study highlighted cancer as the leading cause of death in Denmark followed by a recent Governmental report showing a significant increase in cancer survival, but with lingering effects and reduced quality of life.

The study demonstrated that certain types of cancers such as lung, pancreas, breast, brain, urinary tract, and uterine cancers alleviated the risk of diabetes. Also, various cancer therapies can contribute to an increased risk along with cancer cells themselves.

Lykke Sylow, Associate Professor, University of Copenhagen stated that people diagnosed with cancer and subsequently diabetes, do not generally live a long life in comparison with people who do not develop diabetes while experiencing cancer. He also asserted that screening cancer patients for both chances of survival and quality of life need to be investigated as a preventive measure. Other factors such as different types of exercise for people with cancer especially, those that may be effective for treating and preventing diabetes can also be recommended. However, she concluded that these suggestions and investigative results should be considered from a long-term perspective and needs to be tested.
